Eurocash deploys Image Recognition technology to improve operational efficiency and execution quality in stores

Eurocash, the leader in the Polish wholesale market and one of the largest franchise network operators in the country, is deploying a shelf image recognition system to support operational efficiency and the quality of standard execution in stores.

The deployment

Built on Retail Image Recognition by Asseco Platform, the solution lets Eurocash operations teams verify and enforce key store standards using objective data, faster and with less manual work.

Scope

Enforcing standards on measured data

The deployed solution covers several key operational areas. Teams can verify and enforce KPIs for product availability, price compliance and planogram compliance. They can also follow what is happening in stores on an ongoing basis and react quickly to any discrepancies. The system checks on-shelf availability and flags gaps, and it verifies that displays and merchandising meet the agreed standard.

“For us, shelf recognition is above all a tool that improves operational efficiency and execution quality in stores. Objective shelf data lets us cut down on manual checks and make operational decisions faster.”

Measurement

Key KPIs measured automatically

~97%

product recognition accuracy at Eurocash Group, and still climbing

Product availability
Price compliance
Planogram compliance

Recognition accuracy improves as more photos pass through the system. The model learns new packaging variants and shelf layouts, and it gets better at handling how photos are taken in a real store.

Dawid Maksymiuk, Eurocash Group
“This is one of the most innovative IT deployments at Eurocash Group in recent years. Shelf image analysis lets us measure key KPIs automatically, and product recognition accuracy already reaches about 97% and keeps climbing. We also value the partnership approach of Asseco Platform, which made it possible to fit the solution properly to our business needs.”

Technology

Less manual work, faster decisions

Retail Image Recognition by Asseco Platform analyses shelf photos automatically and checks them against agreed standards. Operations teams get an objective picture of what is happening in stores. That makes it possible to cut the time spent on manual inspections and to point resources at the stores that actually need attention.

1

Photo

A store employee photographs the shelf with a mobile app. It takes ten to twenty seconds and requires no counting or note-taking.

2

Recognition

The model identifies products, counts facings, reads prices and compares the shelf layout against the current planogram.

3

Result

KPIs land in the analytics layer. The team sees where the standard holds and where a response is needed.

Context

Why the shelf is starting to get measured

For a long time, checking in-store standards came down to observation. Someone walked in, looked around and wrote notes on a form, and the result depended on how closely they looked and how much time they had. Measuring across an entire network needed its own project and its own budget, so in practice it happened rarely.

Image recognition changes that arithmetic. The photo is taken during an ordinary store visit and the analysis happens inside the system. Measurement stops being a project and becomes a by-product of work someone is doing anyway.

Only then does a conversation about enforcing standards have a reference point. Instead of debating impressions, operations teams talk about what is visible in a photo from a specific store on a specific day.
